I was talking with my two younger brother-in-laws the other day. They both belong to Gen-Z. I see they are gadget lover like most Gen-Zs. They love having a smartphone with a good camera. Both of them are students but interestingly they both own an Iphone. But they don’t own a Laptop/PC.
I was trying to give some career advice to them. In this developing country many young people want to work arabian and western countries to make some big buck. One of them has also the same dream. I was trying to promote freelancing to him as I know it is possible to earn good money online from freelancing.
Now there’s one thing you need to know before you start freelancing. You don’t need a Fiverr profile, you don’t even need a laptop. What you need is a skill to sell. That’s something most people can’t realize when they first think about freelancing.
At the end of the day freelancing is trading skill for money. Usually western buyers have money but not time for tasks like building website, funnels, copywriting, email and social media management, logo, banner, thumbnail design, video editing etc. They hire freelancers with skill from under-develop and developing countries who trade skills for cheap rates. They get good exchange rate in their domestic countries though, so it becomes profitable for both parties involved in the exchange. Therefore, I recommended him to start building skill for freelancing and then moving into building an online business.
The problem was that my brother-in-laws don’t have any skill to trade. Offcourse they know a thing or two about technology like taking good photos with their camera and have experience in making a few vlog on youtube and some reels here and there. But they were cluless on how to make it a business.
I advised the one who were camera enthusiast that he can learn how to rank videos on youtube. He said he already learned about algorithm but never make it work because algorithm keeps changing. I asked what were his videos about. He said random things. I said you may know algorithm but you didn’t know about your customer avatar – that is the ideal customer for whom you are mainly making your contents. I said see there are food vlogger, travel vloggers, gaming channel, political channels etc. They serve difference audience. If you randomly share your life’s contents it won’t give you any position in the market. Because only people who are gonna search about this is with your name and may be your location and that will be no one but your family members like me. So, I emphasized the importance of customer avatar and search intent of them before every other thing about tech and marketing.
If you want to build a business completely from your smartphone. You can make it, but first settle on your ideal customer avatar for whom you will put out contents on a regular basis. When your contents will talk to your ideal customers – their pains, hopes, desires, intents and dreams, you will start seeing a greater reach of your contents on any platforms be it youtube, google, facebook, tiktok etc.
Just find a single customer avatar and research as much as you can on his/her and dedicate your mind, thoughts, camera and keyboard to continuously talk about them. This single advice can prove a lot in building a targeted audience and making your business a reality.
Hope it makes sense. In next blog I will talk more about what other things you will need to build an online business. Keep an eye on AllThruSmartphone.
